Crooks Trial Starts, Chilling 911 Audio Played in Court | Crime
(ABC 6 NEWS) -- The prosecution and defense agreed on one point on the opening day of testimony in the Noah Crooks murder trial – both sides say Noah Crooks shot and killed his mother.
In his opening statement to a 7 woman, 5 man jury, defense attorney William Kutmus acknowledged that Noah Crooks DID shoot his mother more than 20 times at the family’s home near Osage, Iowa.
But Kutmus said the now 14 year old Crooks was insane at the time. Kutmus told the jury he will produce an expert witness who will testify that Noah Crooks suffers from a condition known as Intermittent Explosive Disorder, which is characterized by brief, violent outbursts.
Prosecutors opened their portion of the trial by playing the 9-1-1 tape from the night of March 24th of last year when Noah Crooks called authorities to report that he had killed his mother, then tried to rape her. During the emotional 12 minute call Crooks repeatedly told a sheriff’s dispatcher “I don’t know why I did it,” and “I am so ashamed right now.”
He also told the dispatcher “I feel like I want to be in a dream right now so I can just wake up.”
At one point, the teenager also told the dispatcher “I should have never played Call of Duty.”
Crooks was reportedly addicted to violent video games, and three hours before Gretchen Crooks was shot to death she apparently took away Noah’s video game controller because of his poor grades.
But earlier in Wednesday’s proceedings prosecuting attorney Denise Timmins told prospective jurors “Kids who play video games don’t get a pass on being violent to other people.”
Testimony resumes at nine o’clock Thursday morning at the Wright County courthouse in Clarion, Iowa.
